California Missions

Julian Ritter was commissioned in 1955 by Francis V Scarpulla of the Tortola Restaurant on Polk Street in San Francisco to produce a series of paintings of the California missions. The restaurant was being refurbished and Scarpulla wanted to have something special to adorn the walls of this Early California eatery. Julian ended up painting eight of the twenty-one Franciscan missions in California.
